📍 Phillip Island Overview
Exploring the Island's Geography
Phillip Island is roughly 26 kilometers long and 9 kilometers wide, creating a sheltered bay environment on its northern shore and rugged ocean cliffs on its southern shore. The island is divided into several main areas:
- San Remo & Newhaven: The entry gateway. San Remo is a fishing town on the mainland side, while Newhaven is the first town you cross into on the island.
- Cowes: The island's commercial capital, located on the north-facing bay beach. This is where most hotels, motels, shops, and restaurants are located.
- Rhyll & Cape Woolamai: Rhyll is a quiet wetlands village famous for fishing. Cape Woolamai is home to dramatic pink-granite cliffs and the island's premier surf beach.
- Summerlands Peninsula: The western tip, containing the Penguin Parade, the Nobbies Ocean Center, and seal rocks. This area is designated as a conservation reserve.
Planning Your Island Itinerary
While the Penguin Parade occurs at sunset, there is plenty to do during the day. We recommend arriving at noon to explore the following sequence:
- 12:00 PM: Cross the bridge and have lunch in San Remo or Cowes.
- 1:30 PM: Visit the Koala Conservation Reserve to walk along elevated boardwalks through eucalyptus trees.
- 3:30 PM: Head to the Nobbies Ocean Centre to walk the cliff-edge boardwalks and look for blowholes and offshore seal colonies.
- 5:30 PM: Check in to your accommodation or grab an early dinner in Cowes.
- 7:00 PM (Summer time): Head to the Penguin Parade.
FAQ: Phillip Island
How long does it take to drive around the island?
Driving from the entry bridge at Newhaven to the western tip at the Penguin Parade takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Driving from the main town of Cowes down to the Penguin Parade takes about 15 minutes.
Is there a grocery store on the island?
Yes. The town of Cowes has several major supermarkets (Coles, Woolworths, Aldi), pharmacies, clothing stores, and gas stations. If you are staying in self-catering accommodation, you can easily purchase supplies on the island.
Is it better to stay overnight or do a day trip?
An overnight stay is highly recommended. Because the Penguin Parade finishes late at night, staying in Cowes allows you to avoid a tired 2-hour drive back to Melbourne in the dark. It also gives you a second day to explore beaches and walking trails.
