Penguin Parade Weather & Clothing Guide
The weather at the Penguin Parade is consistently cold, windy, and exposed to the Southern Ocean. You must dress in warm, windproof layers—including long pants, a heavy jacket, a beanie, and closed shoes—even during the summer months.
🧥 Weather Prep Summary
The Weather Challenge: Ocean Wind Chill
Summerland Beach faces directly south towards Antarctica. There is no landmass between the parade stands and the icy winds of the Southern Ocean. Even if it is a warm 25°C day in Melbourne, the coastal temperature drops rapidly at sunset, and the wind chill can make it feel 5°C to 10°C colder than the actual thermometer reading.
Monthly Weather & Sunset Matrix
| Season | Months | Avg Evening Temp | Wind Conditions | Clothing Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Dec – Feb | 14°C – 17°C | Moderate breeze | Long pants, sweater, windproof jacket |
| Autumn | Mar – May | 10°C – 14°C | Strong coastal breeze | Thermals, heavy jacket, beanie |
| Winter | Jun – Aug | 6°C – 10°C | Very strong, icy wind | Full winter gear, layers, gloves, scarf |
| Spring | Sep – Nov | 9°C – 13°C | Gusty, variable winds | Layered clothing, windbreaker, scarf |
How to Layer: The 3-Layer System
Rangers advise using a three-layer system to stay warm while sitting still in the stands for 1.5 hours:

Rain Policy & Umbrellas
The Penguin Parade runs in all weather, including heavy rain. The penguins are waterproof and return to land regardless of downpours. However, visitors sitting in outdoor stands are fully exposed.
🛑 No Umbrellas Allowed in Stands
You are strictly prohibited from opening umbrellas inside the viewing stands or along the narrow boardwalks. Open umbrellas block the line-of-sight of visitors sitting behind you, and the rustling sound can frighten the penguins. You must wear a waterproof rain jacket or poncho. Ponchos are sold at the visitor center souvenir shop if you forget to bring one.
FAQ: Weather & Prep
Does the parade get cancelled in extreme storms?
Almost never. The Penguin Parade only cancels operations in severe, officially declared natural disasters or extreme storm surges that compromise visitor safety structures. Standard heavy rain, high winds, or winter cold do not stop the parade.
Can I bring a blanket or seat cushion?
Yes. Bringing a wool blanket to wrap around your legs is highly recommended. If you have General Admission tickets, the concrete bleachers act as a cold heat-sink, so bringing a foam seat cushion makes sitting for 1 hour much warmer and more comfortable.
Are there heaters at the stands?
No. The General Viewing and Penguins Plus outdoor stands have no heaters or wind shelters to maintain the natural environment. Only the Underground Viewing stand is climate-controlled and heated.
