Hour-by-Hour Driving Plan

This itinerary is optimized to reduce backtrack driving and match the sunset timing requirements of the Penguin Parade. (Timings below are based on a spring/autumn schedule; adjust starting times slightly earlier in winter or later in summer).

10:00 AM

Depart Melbourne CBD

Load up your car with warm jacket layers and snacks. Take the Monash Freeway (M1) out of the city and head south-east toward the Gippsland Highway.

12:00 PM

Lunch at San Remo Fishing Village

Arrive in San Remo right before crossing the bridge. Grab fresh fish and chips at the San Remo Fishermans Co-Op. If you are on time, you can watch the wild pelicans being fed by hand at the jetty at 12:00 PM daily.

1:30 PM

Koala Conservation Reserve

Cross the bridge onto Phillip Island. Drive 10 minutes to the Koala Reserve. Spend an hour walking the tree-top boardwalks to spot wild koalas at eye-level.

3:30 PM

The Nobbies Coastal Walk

Drive to the westernmost tip of the island. Walk the free cliff-edge boardwalk to see the blowhole, seal rocks, and spectacular Southern Ocean views. Keep an eye out for wallabies grazing in the fields along the road.

5:00 PM

Early Dinner in Cowes

Drive 15 minutes north to the seaside town of Cowes. Have an early dinner at a pub or cafe along Thompson Avenue, as food choices at the Penguin Parade venue are limited and busy.

6:30 PM

Arrive at the Penguin Parade

Drive to the Penguin Parade Visitor Center (15 mins from Cowes). Park, scan your digital pass, browse the educational center, and head down to the beach stands to take your seats.

8:30 PM

Head back to Melbourne

Once you have watched the penguins return to their nests from the boardwalks, walk back to your car. Slow down for wild wallabies on the road and drive back to Melbourne (approx 2 hours).

FAQ: Day Trip Planning

Can I do this itinerary using public transport?

No. Public transport does not connect these locations on the island, and there are no return transport services to Melbourne after the parade finishes at night. If you do not have a car, you must book a guided bus tour from Melbourne CBD.

What should I change if visiting in winter?

In winter (June to August), sunset occurs early (around 5:15 PM). You will need to start your itinerary 2 hours earlier: leave Melbourne at 8:00 AM, have lunch in San Remo at 11:30 AM, and head straight to the Penguin Parade by 4:00 PM.

Is a 3-Park Pass required for this itinerary?

While you can buy individual entry tickets, buying the Nature Parks "3-Park Pass" is cheaper and covers both the Koala Reserve and the Penguin Parade. It is highly recommended for this itinerary.
